Grab whatever green clothing items you own and wear them every single freakin’ day because it’s Masters week!  As you prepare for the “Tradition unlike any other”, it’s time to also get ready for an overstuffed helping of Fantasy Golf analysis.  That’s from all the big names in the industry.  While I’m not a big name (not yet – hey, there’s nothing wrong with lofty goals), I do have plenty of thoughts to share.  Let’s open with my PGA DFS 2022 Masters Sleepers, a list that outlines my favorite cheaper alternatives on DraftKings, as well as their longshot odds to win.

Obviously the term “SLEEPER” can be interpreted in a number of different ways.  In this case, it’s the lower cost players that stand out in key statistical areas, specifically $7,000 or less on DraftKings.

Oh, and here’s a quick reminder for the not-so-regular reader, I hit on J.J. Spaun last week at the Valero Texas Open.  Although, I will say, it’s a rarity for a longshot to deliver a title at Augusta.  That doesn’t mean these lower cost players can’t make an impact with your DFS lineups (or land a top ten).

A few notes and stats to consider at Augusta National:

  • SG: Approach and SG: Off the Tee are key categories to focus on at Augusta
  • Positive course history is a must, as newbies almost never make a major impact (Fuzzy Zoeller did in 1979 and Will Zalatoris was runner-up last year – it’s otherwise rare)
  • SG: Par 5: Performance on both 13 and 15 is often pivotal to making a run
  • Three Putt Avoidance: Getting the jitters in this event is a common occurrence
  • A focus tied to SG: Putting on faster greens is also a good idea
  • Scrambling: Rare as a key stat, but something I did keep an eye on this week
  • Tiger Woods is playing – and let’s leave it at that (no idea whether you should roster him or not)
  • Weather Forecast: Thursday: Scattered thunderstorms in AM, winds 10-20mph, High 75; Friday: High 67, Winds 15-25mph; Saturday: Sunny with clouds later, High 61, Winds 10-20mph, Sunday: Sunny High 68, Winds 5-10mph
  • If you like to consider pairings, here is the current list of starting times for the opening two rounds of the tournament, as presented on Twitter by the PGA TOUR Communications account:

For what it’s worth, all four of my sleepers from last year’s Masters made the cut.  That includes Corey Conners (T8) and Si Woo Kim (T12).

Tiger Woods 2019 Masters Display Frame

As for this year, I ran multiple models on Fantasy National and checked key stats via the PGA TOUR website.  The data I analyzed includes recent events and history at Augusta.  Based off that data, here are my favorite sleepers on DraftKings, accompanied by their current odds via DraftKings Sportsbook.

PGA DFS 2022 Masters Sleepers: Bargains on DraftKings

Gary Woodland (DK: $6,900, WINNER +10000, Top 5 +1600, Top 10 +700)

The long-hitting Woodland has been on a solid run as of late.  That includes a T8 at the Valero last week.  Overall, Woodland has three top ten finishes in his last five events.  He has gained strokes on approach in five straight events.  He has also gained strokes putting in five of his last seven events.  His play at Augusta has been far from stellar, but he has made the cut in two of the last three Masters.  Over his last 24 rounds (via Fantasy National), Woodland ranks 9th in the field in SG: Approach, 9th in Driving Distance, 7th in Scrambling Gained, 14th in Three Putt Avoidance, and 20th in GIR Gained.  He features an interesting mixture of distance, approach game, and limiting mistakes in the short game.

Robert MacIntyre (DK: $7,000, WINNER +11000, Top 5 +1600, Top 10 +750)

MacIntyre has only logged two PGA TOUR events in 2022, finishing 35th at the Valero and 15th at the Genesis.  What’s most intriguing about him is his play in majors during the 2021 season.  He made the cut in every major, including an 8th place finish at The Open Championship and a T12 at his first Masters.  He doesn’t shy away from the big stage and the difficult venues.  If he gets into trouble at Augusta, he has been a scrambling machine, ranking 1st in the field in Scrambling Gained (last 24 rounds played).  Also over his last 24 rounds, he ranks 27th in SG: Approach and 14th in GIR Gained. Again, it’s his ability to show up in the big tournaments.  Let’s see if he can repeat that in 2022.

Cameron Young (DK: $7,000, WINNER +13000, Top 5 +1800, Top 10 +800)

Luke List ranked higher in models I ran, but List has lost 18.1 strokes putting over his last four events.  You simply can’t do that at Augusta.  Young hasn’t played since a missed cut at a rain-soaked and windy PLAYERS.  There, Young lost strokes in all major statistical categories, except for Around the Green. Prior to that event, he gained strokes putting in four straight events (and seven of eight).  He also gained strokes off the tee in 12 out of 13 events.  He ran off a stretch of six straight made cuts.  He’ll be a newbie at Augusta, but the recent form is there, including ranking 2nd in the field in SG: Off the Tee, 7th in Driving Distance, and 6th in Scrambling (all last 24 rounds played, via Fantasy National).
