For Robinson Cano, it was his first trip to New York since signing a 10-year, $240 million dollar deal with the Seattle Mariners. To celebrate the return, Jimmy Fallon took to the streets to have fun with the locals.
In the end, Jimmy Fallon hit another one out of the park.
In a very funny bit on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the new king of late night pranked Yankees fans, one after another, presenting fans with a cardboard cutout of Cano, and asking each to not only ruthlessly boo him, but also to say whatever was on their mind at the time.
Only, Cano was in on the gag, and snuck out from behind the cardboard wall to surprise each fan.
The results (below, via ‘The Tonight Show’ YouTube channel) were absolutely priceless.
The best part is, this isn’t the first time that Fallon has played a baseball-related gag on New Yorkers. For those that jumped on the Fallon bandwagon a little late, there was also a gem of a bit from last season, where Matt Harvey interviewed Mets fans about himself on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’.
It’s nice to know that Cano’s sense of humor didn’t get buried in all those BENJAMINS.
Well, King Felix and Iwakuma for the rotation…plus this kid Walker and others… Smoak was a top notch prospect coming from Texas, and has not really panned out yet. Seattle has talent, but it just wasn’t developed. That happens.
Hey, I’m with you, I mean… if I were to go and improve that team, I would not have started by spending $250 million on Cano. I’m just saying they have talent, but it also comes down to GM’s and coaches, etc. They haven’t had the balance.
Really, I think what started the derailment of the Mariners was Andy MacPhail robbing them blind, when he was with the Orioles. MacPhail traded Erik Bedard to Seattle and managed to bring back a five-player package that included top prospects Adam Jones and Chris Tillman. Tillman is now the #1 starter and Jones is a 30HR-100RBI guy that plays gold glove defense in CF. Those are two tough, young pieces to lose, when you are trying to build some consistency.
They likely see random teams like the Indians and Pirates getting in last year… plus they have money and a good fan base. Seattle also has a solid core of steady pitching… they just need some impact bats. The younger, talented guys are not getting the job done offensively… Cano doesn’t have enough protection around him in the lineup.
REV… Yeah, definitely. It just goes to show you… people are all talk when they are far away or behind a keyboard.
As for Jimmy… been hooked on his show for a while… when he was on late night. They put up some great stuff… and have a lot of fun with the guests.
TOP–
I think they are actually paying him 25 million a year! The average isn’t actually that bad… .288 the last I checked, but just one home run. Not as good of an offense… pitcher’s park, too.
As with most of Fallon’s stuff, I found it hysterical but I also found it to be a pretty interesting case study on how fans act when their hundreds away from professional athletes as opposed to meeting them face to face.
Terrific season by Robinson Cano , pi#s poor batting average . Remind me again why the Mariners are paying him $20 million a year ? LOL,LOL !!! Donald Sterling’s spiritual guide from beyond the grave is said to be none other than former Reds’ owner Marge Schott . How quaint that it took less than s five minutes of Adam Silver showing that he has balls , which is something that David Stern could not do during his entire career as Donald Sterling repeatedly carried on with his bigoted racial behavior Yet there are @s#holes who jumped to the defense of the former commissioner even when it was known about the Clippers owner’s prior bad acts ,
