The sports world has been active, from the PGA’s first major of 2011, to a surprise retirement in Major League Baseball, to a former NBA star getting into trouble with the law, and more.  It sounds like it’s time for another episode of Throwing Tomatoes.

So as the sports world turns, the stories pile up and more sports frustration emerges.  Don’t sweat it, The Wife Hates Sports has them all covered – in lycopene, that is.

Manny Ramirez

…for being Manny, yet again.

It was just weeks ago that the world wondered how the signing of both Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez would affect the Tampa Bay Rays’ offense.  Just six games into the regular season, we have our answer: NOT MUCH.

Sources told ESPN.com that Ramirez tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug sometime during spring training.  With another major slap on the wrist, Ramirez would face a 100-game suspension.  He has instead chosen to retire.

Manny Ramirez has chosen to retire after playing just 5 games with the Tampa Bay Rays

With this news, there’s simply no way that Manny should make the Hall of Fame.  NO WAY.  Getting busted again almost paints him as a player that’s either clueless, or one that feels that he’s above the law.

Allen Iverson

…for making his “Practice” speech a distant memory.

Former NBA star Allen Iverson recently got himself into trouble with police in Atlanta.  Driving as a passenger in his Lamborghini, Iverson took his frustrations out on the police after he and driver Antwuan Clisby were pulled over due to a traffic violation.

The quotes that generated from this incident closely rival that of Iverson’s “Practice” speech.  OK, maybe not, but it gives me the chance to post that famous AI video.

Jay Cutler

… for being a few months late to the party.splatteredtomato

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has finally spoken up regarding the criticism he received after suffering a knee injury during the NFC Championship game against the Packers.

But here’s my problem: Cutler is happy that his teammates had his back, but this could have been water under the bridge by now.  Address the issue immediately.  Get it out of the way and save the pain for you, your teammates and the fan base.  Now it’s fresh again after two months.  That, plus Cutler could’ve avoided it all in the first place if he knew how to handle himself in the spotlight, by avoiding getting caught walking stairs the next day, and also visually showing little interest in teammates on the sideline during the game.

Heidi Watney

If you want to impress the beautiful Heidi Watney, don’t feed her a chicken and waffle sandwich

For those that missed it, NESN on-field reporter Heidi Watney was testing out some of the foods at Progressive Field in Cleveland.  The video has been pulled due to MLB copyrights, but for those that didn’t see it, Watney nearly gagged on the food (specifically a chicken and waffle sandwich), and did so right in front of the cook, who clearly went from proud in the beginning, to embarrassed and mortified in the end.  It was truly an awkward moment that eclipses that of Boston’s dreary opening week (and 1-6 start).

As for Heidi (right), she’s still one of the most beautiful women covering baseball.

Martin Kaymer and Other 2011 Masters Busts

Central Arkansas Football

…for its new field that makes Boise State’s look smurfy.

beetlejuice

Central Arkansas’ new field is Beetlejuice’s suit turned into turf

Watch out Boise State and Eastern Washington, Central Arkansas is joining the party.  Its football future is soon to be carried out on a purple and gray mess.  This field looks destined to be the most hideous in football, almost looking like something Beetlejuice would appreciate, and no one else.  Too bad the phrase, “Central Ark, Central Ark, Central Ark!” won’t make it go away.

And finally…

…a quick-strike of red to the following teams…

Charlotte Bobcats – 4 straight losses end its hopes for sneaking a playoff spot

Utah Jazz – The Jazz have lost 9 of 10, and fall well below .500

Minnesota Timberwolves – 12 straight losses lead to worst record in the NBA

Philadelphia Flyers – 4 straight losses drop them from top seed in East

Florida Panthers – 9 straight losses lead to worst record in Eastern conference

Detroit Red Wings – An average 10-game stretch drop Wings to 3rd seed in West
